What Should I Do if My Bridge Falls Out?
October 17, 2024
Dental bridges are meant to stay in place in your mouth for up to 15 years with proper care, however occasionally they can fall out before they need replacement. If you lose yours accidentally, don’t panic. Follow these steps and you’ll be smiling again in no time!
Call Your Dentist
The first thing you should do if your bridge falls out is to call your dentist for further instructions. They will ask you a few questions about the condition of your mouth and of the bridge and will schedule you to come in as soon as possible for assistance. You may need a new one, or it is possible that it can be reattached or repaired depending on its condition.
Gather the Pieces
If your bridge is in multiple pieces, gather them all together and keep them in a safe place until you can bring them to your dentist. There is a chance that you may be able to temporarily reattach it with denture adhesive until your dentist can see you, however they can tell you if it’s a good idea to attempt this when you call.
Try Reinserting It
You can try to reinsert it if the supporting teeth are still in good condition, however if they are loose or if it is damaged, it may not fit. Do not force it into place if you cannot get it back where it should be, as this could damage your teeth or the bridge. Your dentist can help with this at your appointment.
Avoid Use
Even if you can temporarily reattach your bridge, be careful to avoid that side of your mouth if you need to eat before you can be seen by your dentist. This will help prevent any further damage to your teeth or prosthetic and will keep it in place until it can be secured at your appointment.
Remember, sometimes bridges come out accidentally, but if it does, there’s no need to panic. Just follow these steps and your smile will be restored as soon as possible!
